“The number of seats has increased as we can now accommodate more students with the appointment of new faculty members and infrastructure facilities,” said Janat Shah, director of IIM-U. “This year, the cut-off is likely to be around 97 percentile which means that that those scoring below this percentile in CAT-2014 cannot participate in the admission to these IIMs,” said Shah, who cleared that fees hike is subjected to the approval from the board.
These new IIMs have a total of little over 800 seats and will be calling almost 10,000 candidates for the combined personal interview and written ability test commonly known as CAP. The admission process will begin from mid-February and will end mid-March. Sources said newly announced IIM-Nagpur is likely to commence the session from this year.
IIM-U has also decided to give a few extra points to women and non-engineers seeking admission. IIM-U has awarded 50% weightage to CAT score, 30% to personal interview and aptitude test, 20% for personal profile that includes academic background (40%), work experience (30%), preference to women candidates (15%) and non-engineers (15%).
“We have been trying to increase the number of girls in the IIMs which is around 20% here. Our admission criteria is intending to bring in more girls and non-engineering background students,” said Shah. So far, 80% students at IIMs have an engineering background and the rest are from arts and commerce.
