Here we want to present our new release on Fluid Mechanics, devoted to problem-solving with the use of MATLAB, titled Fluid Mechanics: Problem Solving Using MATLAB (eBook ISBN: 9789389347630).
The Scope of Fluid Mechanics
Fluid Mechanics is transformed from a fundamental subject to an application-oriented subject. It constitutes the foundation of what is now referred to as “Water Engineering,” entailing hydraulics, hydrology, groundwater engineering, environmental engineering, irrigation and drainage engineering, and hydropower engineering. It is, therefore, the first course at the undergraduate level in these branches of water engineering. Hence, there is a need to develop a book that focuses on problem-solving. Furthermore, these days there is umpteen computer software available which can be employed to solve a wide variety of problems, and such software is easily accessible to undergraduate students in most engineering departments. One of the most popular and versatile software is called MATLAB. Fortunately, many students in the beginning years of their engineering studies become well versed in the application and use of this software.
Here is an overview of the topic this book is about.
Books on Fluid Mechanics
Over the years, numerous experts introduced more books on the theme. The majority of them are rather theoretical with numerical problems and derivations. However, due to the increase in computational facilities and the availability of MATLAB and equivalent facilitators, the subject is also transforming into a computational perspective.
Admirably Professors K. Srinivasa Raju and D. Nagesh Kumar, who are well established and recognized scholars in water engineering, recognized the need to bring fluid mechanics to the fingertips of undergraduate students and embarked on a journey to address this need. Both these professors are highly accomplished and have long years of experience in teaching fluid mechanics at the undergraduate level.
Organization of Book
Fluid Mechanics: Problem Solving Using MATLAB is probably the first book that is exclusively devoted to problem-solving with the use of MATLAB. This book will be an excellent supplement to a regular fluid mechanics book used in teaching fluid mechanics at the undergraduate level. This book contains problems on virtually all topics that are covered in undergraduate fluid mechanics courses plus more.
The subject matter of the book encompasses:
- Sixteen chapters that are devoted to:
- Fluid properties
- Pressure measurement
- Hydrostatics
- Buoyancy
- Hydro-kinematics
- Bernoulli applications
- Momentum principle
- Orifices and mouthpieces
- Notches and weirs
- Flow-through pipes
- Laminar flow
- Turbulent flow
- Boundary layer theory
- Drag and lift
- Open channel flow
- Dimensional analysis
- 161 example problems supported by corresponding MATLAB codes compatible with the 2016a version (www.mathworks.com)
- Eight derivations
- 162 exercise problems
- Question Bank comprises 261 representative questions and 120 numerical problems
- An appendix containing selected MATLAB commands
A most impressive feature is a live demonstration of representative codes (12 in mp4 format and 161 MATLAB codes) that are available in the Learning Centre Section at www.phindia.com, for the benefit of readers so that they can understand the intricacies of coding.
The book is easy to read and follow and will have a great deal of appeal to undergraduate students. It will be equally appealing to faculty members who are engaged in teaching fluid mechanics at the undergraduate level. It can support undergraduate students in fluid mechanics and can be referred to as a text/reference book. Solution Manual is available for instructors who adopt the book for classroom teaching.
